Hairwork: Selected Work

Hair in Kai’s practice functions not only as material but as a concept that speaks to traditions and practices existing within the Black feminine tradition. Black hair addresses the complexity of identity, through avenues of intimacy, ownership, economic, and history. Kai uses techniques of braiding and coiling, traditions passed down through the diaspora to question what Black hair functions as in this contemporary space.
